Jan. 2, Kendall - again

Was hoping to do something different, but it's hard to beat Kendall for access and variety.  Greg Louie was off from work and brought his coworker Stuart.  Don H. joined the party and we followed a well established skin track up into the Kendall Peaks basin.  This area has been pretty hammered.  With a bunch of trip reports posted about people skiing the area, the lemmings have been following.  Oh well, even with if the area was not as tracked, good snow existed in only a narrow window.  The sun up high was making the snow crusty, not too mention the steady east wind.  We made one lap up high on the ridge and enjoyed the views above the cloud bank.  Then we dropped into the fog, where the snow was holding up much nicer.   Lapped some North facing trees and found some fun stuff.

Dec 29 Kendall

Got an alpine start with Seth and Brandon to play in the Kendall area.  North facing slopes are still holding excellent snow.  Southerly aspects have definitely gotten crusty.  Good times.

Dec 21, Kendall trees

After a good week of sidecountry skiing at Alpental, ventured out on skins to Kendall trees.  Had a large group that included Frank, Silas, Crispin/Dave and another couple.  Found some good snow and spun a few laps.  Silas would like it known that I couldn't catch him on the way out.

Nov 26, Kendall Lakes

Well, if you can't have snow, I guess that sunshine is the next best thing.  Toured up into the Kendall Lakes basin.  This is basically a logging road until the last bit.  I made it to the upper Kendall lake, but didn't have the energy or time to go for the summit ridgeline.  Ski down was an exercise in power wedging.  Snow is continous to the trailhead, but just barely.

April 6, Tree Skiing, Snoqualmie Pass

Hooked up with Greg Louie and Crispin for a little powder skiing.  We thought we would follow a nice skin track up the Phantom side of Snoqualmie Mt.  Unfortunately, as we pulled into the parking lot,  the ski area security guy, Kent, was trying to shut down the Alpental parking lots.  It appears that a party of five skiers, that had already headed up Snoq. Mt., set off a small avalanche.  The parking lot was soon to be a search and rescue staging area.  Word was that two skiers had non-life threatening injuries, but would need help getting off the mountain.  We decided on alternate plans and headed for our favorite tree skiing area,  down the road, and managed to rack up three laps of good April Pow.

Jan 8, Otterson back from Denmark

Scott was in town for two weeks over the holidays.  With a jam packed schedule, he only had time to ski one day.  Since he is in Denmark until May, this will be his one ski day of the winter.  We tried to hook up last week, but about 3" of rain denied any skiing.  Luckily with cooler temps. we enjoyed some great powder turns today.

or is it "fix the heel and fix the problem"?

It's a nice life.
We alway's give Scott a hard time about telemarking.  It look's like a lot of work!  He ripped the powder pretty good, but the survival tree skiing down lower was pretty tough.  Maybe, he just needs to get out more than one day.   Unfortunately sounds like Denmark is pretty flat.

Dec. 29, Kendall Ridge

Hooked up with Chris B. and Greg for a tour.  Yesterday we had a frozen rain event, but the new snowfall today made for tolerable skiing.  About 6-8 inches over the crust.  Crust was firm enough that you did not break through.  As usual, just gaining the ridge was an adventure.

April 3, Kendall Tree Skiing

Northwest Avalanche rates danger at HIGH above 4,000'.   HIGH means natural and human triggered slides likely.  Travel in avalanche terrain not recommended!  Thanks to dire warnings, our crew of 6 had the entire Kendall area to ourselves.  With new snow in last 24 hours reported between 13" and 24" we were in a good position for some extremely good powder skiing.   With our crew of 6 rotating breaking trail, we quickly busted a beautiful skin track up to treeline in the Kendall basin.   With abundant energy and great snow we made mutiple 1,000 foot runs.   After four laps I was cooked, but Seth, Crispin, and Jon stuck it out for at least one more run.    Didn't get many ski shots since the skiing was so good, it was hard to stop and pull out the camera.  Not to mention it was hard to catch someone before they flew by.

Kendall Ridge, January 16, 2010

We tried to gain enough elevation to get above yesterday's rain event.  I think we need a taller mountain.  Well, the skin up was good.  The ski down was a little tougher.  Glad I didn't invite anyone besides Seth and Greg.  They don't seem to mind skinning for two hours to ski horrendous snow.  They seem to actually enjoy it.

Nov 21, Kendall Ridge

Hooked up with Greg Louie and Mike O'Brien to try out Kendall Ridge.  Would have been nice if the rain line had been a little lower yesterday, but found good snow as we broke out of the trees.   Coverage was excellent up high, and were able to skin most of the way to the ridge top.  Had good turns before venturing into the forest.

March 8, Kendall Trees

Eric genuflects through the trees. Notice the avalanche damage to the tree tops. That must have been a good year.

Seth

Hooked up with Seth and Holly, then Eric and Robert caught up to us. Snow was very nice and made multiple laps through the trees below Kendall.

Dec 22, Kendall Ridge

Hmm, ski partners kind of bailed on me today. Luckily, Collin from Ladder 10 called as I was getting ready to leave work. He was ready for a good workout, so he broke trail from Sahalie up to the Commonwealth, where we ran into Gordy. Seemed he had driven all the way from Port Townsend and was very happy to find two other people to break trail. Snow conditions were 3 - 4 feet of totally unconsolidated snow. It was a little windpacked, but not enough to keep the rocks at bay. Made it to the Kendall ridge then enjoyed some very nice turns back down. Nice day!
