Feb. 27, Kendall Peaks Area

Crispin drops in on the lower slopes.  We started our descent in the trees above the upper meadow in the picture.
Wind loading precluded any idea of climbing to the ridge top.

Despite high winds blasting the Cascades for the last 36 hours, we thought we would get out and see what was happening in the Kendall Peaks area.   The area is easily accessed from the Pacific Crest Trail where it crosses under I-90 by Summit West ski area.   The snowshoe trail up into the commonwealth was perfectly groomed.  Once up in the Commonwealth Valley the wind had blown tree bombs and loose snow over the skintrack and ski tracks left over from the weekend.  Crispin picked his way up through the trees until we reached the major slide path below Kendall Peaks proper.   Despite evidence of heavy skier use over the last week, thanks to the strong winds, the area skied like fresh powder, albeit fresh wind effected powder.  We wrapped up the East ridge to our high point and dropped in for some pretty good turns.   Good day with Crispin and Greg Louie.

Feb. 24, Mt. Catherine

Hooked up with Greg for a quick Mt. Catherine lap.

It was nice that someone broke trail for us.

February 22, Day 50 of the Season

Seth, in the slot entrance.  Snow Lake in the distance.
This is my twentieth winter living at Snoqualmie Pass.   We moved to Hyak in 1998.   We counted our ski days for a few years and typically would end up somewhere in the mid sixties.   I haven't kept track in a long time so I am trying to remember to write my ski days on the calendar.  Today was day 50.  My season typically starts in October or November with a ski tour at Mt. Rainier.  I count any day that skis or snowboard are on my feet, alpine touring or lift served.    It has been an extremely good week of skiing as we have received copious amounts of new snow and had cooler than normal temperatures. I started the day with two laps at Alpental, accessing the powder through the "Nash" backcountry gate.    For the afternoon I hooked up with Seth at 12:30.   Starting at the Adler condo's back door we toured up Snoqualmie Mt. to the entrance of the Slot Couloir.   Due to our late start, a couple of ski groups had already proceeded us.   This made for easy skinning, as a good trail had been put in, but much of the fresh snow was tracked out in the Slot.   Sometimes I don't mind being late to the Slot.  The steep slopes require a lot of attention to avoid falling and manage the loose snow that is kicked off with every turn.   The couloir still required our full attention until it eased up on the lower slopes, where the apron skied beautifully.   On our exit climb, we decided the snow was too good to not due an extra lap.   Back on the front side,  we stayed in the trees to avoid the strong Solar effect on the open slopes.  Great day 50.  Nice video, by Seth, at bottom of page.

Always steep

Exit apron, lot's of tracks.  Sunny day brought out the skiers

Heading for the exit pass.

Hard to see, but decided to stop near the top of the exit route and ski another lap.  Seth is tiny dot at the bottom

Feb. 14, Calm After the Storm

Francine gets payback for a week of shoveling
It was probably the storm of the decade.  Over 60 inches had fallen during the storm cycle.   Interstate 90 was shut down for two days.  North Bend had to declare a State of Emergency and the national guard was called to dig out the town.   As the storm finished up, and the sun peeked out, Francine and I toured up Central and did a couple of laps off Triple Sixty face.

Day 2 of storm,  Twenty inches

Day 3, Another 24 inches

Calm after the storm, beautiful day

Feb. 7, Sunny Day Snoqualmie Pass

With the near backcountry starting to look all tracked out, decided to do an easy lift assist tour.  Beautiful day out in the mountains.

Unfortunately, one other party beat us out this morning.
