July 22 Sunday - Ride without guides

Yesterday, Saturday, we were supposed to rent Ebikes and explore on our own.  But, after 5 gorgeous days, the rain came in, so we needed a rest day, and hung out.  Ricardo was quite surprised on Friday that we said we might take Saturday off if it rains.  He seriously wondered what we would do all day if we didn't ride.

The groups that rode Saturday stayed dry before lunch, but it rained steady for 2-3 hours after lunch until their return to the hotel.  They were all hosing themselves off, in addition to their bikes.  We did not envy them.  Everyone said they weren't cold, though.

Today we are on Ebikes (pedal assist bikes) and on our own without guides.  Sunday started nice, and we attempted to repeat the beginning of our Friday ride.  We did that until the gondola ride up out of Canazei.  Once we neared the top, it was raining, so after getting yelled at by the lifty to wash our bikes, we got back on and downloaded to the sunshine.

Here we climbed up valley to the tram, and headed downhill to refugio August Frederick for just an ok lunch.  Did more poking around, as we were on Ebikes, and could easily go out and around to explore on trails.

We ended up climbing back up to the 8 seater Lietner lift (that had heated seats on our morning ride up), thinking that a flow trail started at the top.  Our mistake, so we opted to circumvent the mountain that the Ciampioni Gondola goes to.  We toodled out a gravel trail, down a random dirt road, to trail 28.  Climbed that to Sochers Hut (closed) to descend trail 22, to 28, which branched off right, down the ski hill.  Yes, another steep, dirt trail.  Came out neat St Christina, and tried to take 303 back to town, until a hiker told us "no bikes" and we turned around.  No big deal to descend on pavement and climb back up to La Selva, as we were on Ebikes.

Super fun day.  Kevin did one more lap on the Caimpioni Gondola, on the dowhhill trail, while Francine cleaned her bike and washed up.

Tonite we pack, and tomorrow morning, head on the bus, train, bus to Innsbruck for 2 nights, before heading to Davos Switzerland for 6 nights, to bike for 5 days.

Refugio August,  Great view but not the best food.

Map study with the required after lunch espresso

Dogs hanging on roof

Easy elevation gain.  The lift system here has been amazing

This gravel road was so steep they added concrete strips.
Still kind of freaky riding down. Need good brakes.

Overly animated selfie.  This 8 seat chairlift had heated seats.
Heat was on for the morning chill today.  Way nice!

Last shot of our hotel patio area.  Had a great week and
 met lots of good people.
